TrueHD and Atmos passthrough on Apple TV

Based on: Apple docs, Apple TV 4K (1st gen, 2017) route probing, file checks on a MactvOS: Apple docs for tvOS 26; device test version not recorded (June 2026)Checked

Short answer

Apple TV does not bitstream Dolby TrueHD, so "TrueHD Atmos" from a Blu-ray rip never reaches your receiver as TrueHD. Atmos does work on Apple TV, but as Dolby Digital Plus Atmos (the format streaming services use) or as decoded audio over Apple's Dolby MAT connection.

The short version for home-theater owners

There are two kinds of Dolby Atmos in the wild:

  • TrueHD Atmos: lossless, found on Blu-ray discs and rips of them.
  • Dolby Digital Plus Atmos (E-AC-3 JOC): lossy, used by streaming services.

Apple TV handles the second. It does not pass through the first.

What we measured

  • Apple lists Dolby Atmos among the Apple TV 4K audio formats. Dolby TrueHD is not listed.Apple doc
  • On the Apple TV audio route we observed Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, E-AC-3 JOC and multichannel PCM. Never TrueHD.Tested
  • In Auto, Apple says Apple TV “decodes the best audio format for your equipment and sends uncompressed audio to your speakers”.Apple doc
  • Continuous Audio Connection uses a Dolby MAT connection. Apple warns that older receivers “might indicate an Atmos signal, but audio plays in its original format”.Apple doc
  • Remuxing an MKV’s E-AC-3 JOC track into MP4 kept all 16 Atmos objects in the file’s dec3 box. Stock FFmpeg drops that flag; jellyfin-ffmpeg PR #586 fixes it.Tested
  • Apple’s public Dolby Vision + Atmos sample stream (E-AC-3 JOC) plays end to end in Apple’s player on Apple TV 4K.Tested

We have not yet watched a receiver display “Dolby Atmos” from these tests, because our test bench uses a 7.1 receiver without Atmos. We say so rather than assume.

TrueHD and Atmos paths on Apple TV.

In our own player, TrueHD tracks go to the VLCKit software engine. What reaches the receiver from that path has not been measured yet.

Settings that matter

SettingsVideo and AudioAudio FormatDolby Atmos

Turn Dolby Atmos on if your receiver or soundbar supports it. Continuous Audio Connection sits in the same menu: it avoids dropouts when formats change, but turn it off if you want your receiver to upmix stereo to surround. Apple notes some options only appear when your equipment supports them. More detail in audio passthrough settings explained.

If your library is TrueHD

Your options are: accept decoded audio from a player app, keep a disc player for those titles, or use files with a Dolby Digital Plus Atmos track. To check what your receiver actually gets from Apple TV, see how to test Dolby Atmos on Apple TV.

Questions people ask

Does Apple TV 4K support Dolby TrueHD?

Apple's audio format list for Apple TV 4K names AC-3, E-AC-3 and Dolby Atmos. Dolby TrueHD is not listed, and we never saw a TrueHD bitstream on the Apple TV audio route.

My receiver shows Atmos with Continuous Audio Connection on. Is that real Atmos?

Not necessarily. Apple says that with Continuous Audio Connection some older receivers "might indicate an Atmos signal, but audio plays in its original format".

Which Atmos files can Apple TV pass to a receiver?

Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos (E-AC-3 JOC). That is what Apple TV+, Netflix and other streaming apps use, and it can also be kept when an MKV is remuxed correctly.

If you would rather not fiddle with it

Jellyfin & SMB Video Player

Plays MKV, MP4 and TS from Jellyfin, SMB shares and NAS on Apple TV and iPhone. Native AVPlayer first, an FFmpeg remux path for MKV, and a VLC fallback.
