How to test Dolby Atmos on Apple TV

Based on: Apple docs, Apple TV 4K (1st gen, 2017) with a 7.1 receiver, our speaker-test apptvOS: Apple docs for tvOS 26; device test version not recorded (June to August 2026)Checked

Short answer

Turn on Dolby Atmos under Audio Format, play a known Atmos source such as Apple's public Dolby Vision + Atmos sample stream, and look at your receiver or soundbar's format display. That display is the proof; Apple TV itself has no public way to confirm Atmos output.

Turn Atmos on

SettingsVideo and AudioAudio FormatDolby Atmos

Apple says Apple TV 4K uses the best format available, “including Dolby Atmos if your audio equipment supports it”, by default.

Play a known Atmos source

What we measured

  • Apple hosts a public HLS sample with Dolby Vision video and E-AC-3 JOC audio. Its manifest lists CHANNELS=“16/JOC” for the Atmos audio group. Address: devstreaming-cdn.apple.com/videos/streaming/examples/adv_dv_atmos/main.m3u8Tested
  • That stream plays end to end in Apple’s player on Apple TV 4K.Tested
  • tvOS has no public API that confirms Atmos output. Our speaker-test app can only say “supported” on HDMI routes with 8 or more channels, and “unknown” otherwise. Our app
  • With Continuous Audio Connection on, Apple warns some older receivers “might indicate an Atmos signal, but audio plays in its original format”.Apple doc

Read the receiver, not the Apple TV

Your receiver or soundbar’s front panel or on-screen info shows the incoming format. While the sample plays, it should mention Dolby Atmos (the exact wording varies by brand). If it shows PCM or Dolby Digital Plus without Atmos, check:

  1. Dolby Atmos is on under Audio Format.
  2. The connection is HDMI (optical cannot carry Atmos).
  3. Every device between Apple TV and the receiver passes Atmos, including HDMI switches and the TV if you use eARC.

Our own test bench is a 7.1 receiver without Atmos, so we have not photographed a receiver showing Atmos from this stream. We will add that when we have.

Then test the speakers themselves

A format light tells you Atmos arrived, not that every speaker works.

What we learned building a speaker test

  • On an Atmos route the channel order is Dolby’s (L, R, C, LFE), not HDMI’s (L, R, LFE, C). A test that assumes HDMI order plays the centre tone from the subwoofer.Tested
  • The subwoofer needs a deep tone around 50 Hz or a 20 to 120 Hz sweep. Full-band noise barely moves it.Tested
  • Apple TV has no microphone. Apple’s Wireless Audio Sync uses an iPhone held near the speakers.Apple doc

Questions people ask

How do I know if Apple TV is outputting Dolby Atmos?

Check your receiver or soundbar's format display while playing an Atmos source. tvOS has no public API that confirms Atmos output, so no app on the Apple TV can prove it.

Is there an Atmos test video for Apple TV?

Apple hosts a public sample stream with Dolby Vision video and Dolby Digital Plus Atmos audio (16 objects, JOC). It plays in Apple's own player.

Can Apple TV calibrate my speakers?

Apple TV has no microphone. Apple's Wireless Audio Sync uses an iPhone held near the speakers to fix timing; channel levels are by ear or a meter.
