Kodi on Apple TV: is it available, and what works instead
Based on: Kodi's official tvOS build guide and release mirror, App Store searchtvOS: Kodi guide states tvOS 11 or newerChecked
Short answer
There is no Kodi app in the Apple TV App Store. Kodi does publish tvOS builds, but you have to sideload them with Xcode from a Mac, and with a free Apple developer account the app stops working after 7 days until you sign it again. For most people a regular App Store player that opens MKV and network shares is the practical alternative.
Kodi is not in the App Store
What we checked
- A search of the US App Store API for “kodi” returns no Kodi media player for Apple TV. The only official Kodi app is “Official Kodi Remote” (Kodi Foundation), which controls Kodi on another device.Source
- Kodi’s official release mirror lists tvOS builds: the latest stable is 21.3 (13 December 2025); a 22.0 release candidate appeared on 10 October 2026.Source
How people install it anyway
Kodi’s own tvOS guide describes sideloading:
- You need a Mac with Xcode and an Apple developer account, free or paid. The guide says Kodi can be deployed “via Xcode to work on a non-jailbroken” device.
- With a free account, “the signing will need to be reapplied every 7 days”. Miss that and Kodi stops opening until you redeploy it.
- The guide also mentions re-signing with iOS App Signer and installing over Xcode’s wireless device pairing, and installing the package on jailbroken devices.
- It states a requirement of tvOS 11 or newer, but its tested Xcode versions (11 to 13) show it has not been updated in a while, so expect some friction with current Xcode and tvOS.
What to use instead
What matters is what you used Kodi for:
- Playing your own files from a NAS or SMB share: you need a player that opens MKV and handles DTS and TrueHD tracks sensibly. See how to play MKV on Apple TV.
- A Jellyfin library: see how to watch Jellyfin on Apple TV.
- IPTV playlists: see IPTV players for Apple TV.
Kodi add-ons that scrape streams have no App Store equivalent, and we do not cover them.
