MKV playback on Apple TV, measured: start, seek, audio and subtitles

Based on: Apple TV 4K (1st gen, 2017) and iPhone 13, device test pass of our player 1.0.9tvOS: 26 (device pass, 16 Oct 2026)Checked

Short answer

On a 2017 Apple TV 4K over home Wi-Fi, our test MKVs re-wrapped for Apple's player reached the first frame in about 1.2 to 4.5 seconds, started from the very first frame of the film, and resumed after a seek in 0.22 to 0.98 seconds. HDR10 stayed HDR10 in the stream handed to Apple's player, Dolby Digital Plus (including Atmos) tracks were carried untouched, and text subtitles showed. Files whose only good audio is FLAC, Opus or MP3 play through a software decoder instead.

How we measured

One file per launch, app restarted between runs, on a 2017 Apple TV 4K connected over home Wi-Fi to a Mac serving the files over SMB and http. Numbers come from the player’s own log. The TV was a 1080p SDR set with Match Content off, so nothing here describes HDR on a panel.

What we do not claim

  • Dolby Vision playback: no Dolby Vision sample was tested.
  • Atmos as decoded by a receiver: our bench has no Atmos receiver.
  • Long-play behaviour on the TV: no device run in this pass was longer than a few minutes.
  • “No stalls”: two TV runs paused around 7 seconds in without an error (not reproduced on re-run), and on the Atmos film over SMB a seek ahead of the part already prepared did not land.
  • Anything comparative with other players.

Questions people ask

Does HDR10 survive when an MKV is re-wrapped for Apple TV?

In our test the stream handed to Apple's player kept PQ transfer and BT.2020 colour. That is a statement about the stream, not about what a given TV panel shows; our test TV was a 1080p SDR set.

Does Apple TV play Dolby Atmos from an MKV?

When the MKV has a Dolby Digital Plus Atmos (E-AC-3 JOC) track, we carry that track to Apple's player untouched. We have not measured what a receiver shows, because our test bench has no Atmos receiver.

Why do some MKVs play through a different engine?

Apple's player cannot carry FLAC, Opus or MP3 audio inside the re-wrapped stream. Instead of playing those files silently, our player hands them to a software decoder (VLCKit), which plays the audio.

If you would rather not fiddle with it

Jellyfin & SMB Video Player

Plays MKV and MP4 from a Jellyfin server or an SMB share on Apple TV. MKVs are re-wrapped for Apple's own player without re-encoding; DTS, TrueHD, FLAC and Opus files are decoded by a built-in software player.
